UMAC Featured In Democrat & Chronicle

Level 2 Women's Self-defense courses scheduled for April

(Posted March 24, 2008:) We are excited to announce that UMAC has scheduled the Level 2 classes in our "Women's Self-Defense" program. These classes are structured for individuals who have completed the Level 1 class at either of the UMAC locations.

There are two different Level 2 classes: Weapon Defense & Ground Control. Both are extremely important, and combined with kicking & striking, put the odds in your favor if you ever have to go physical to protect yourself. Also remember that when you have the ability and confidence to defend yourself, you automatically carry yourself differently and decrease the chance that anyone will target you or a loved one.

We encourage those interested to take both classes but they are not dependant on each other. Taking both will, however, give you skills in all areas of self-protection.

The classes are as follows:

Ground Control
Saturday, April 26, 2008
Location: UMAC Victor - 160 School St. Victor, 14564
Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Cost: $20

Ground control is an extremely important class. Participants will learn how to use their strength on the ground to escape an attacker. Basic moves are taught and practiced that make it extremely difficult for anyone to control you on the ground! You have got to experience the transformation that takes place when you control the outcome of a situation. All techniques are practiced on a padded "attacker."

Weapon Defense
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Location: UMAC Brighton - 1780 Monroe Ave. Rochester,14618
Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Cost: $20

In this class, you will learn how to survive against an attacker with a gun, knife or other weapon using psychological and physical skills. You will learn why certain attackers use weapons, what to do and say when a weapon is shown and how to physically incapacitate this person if necessary. All techniques will be practiced on a padded "attacker." You will leave this class prepared & empowered.

Pre-registration is required and these classes are limited to the first 20 people. To register, please call 461-1070. If you have any questions, please call or email.

We look forward to seeing you!

The instructor of the courses, John Ingallina, has been teaching self-protection courses since 1988. He is the director of the NY State Rape and Assault Prevention (NYSRAP) Association and an advisory board member at Rape Crisis Services of Rochester. John is also the Chief Instructor at the United Martial Arts Center and holds a 5th degree black belt in Hattatsu Ryu, a 3rd degree black belt in Tatsu Do and a 3rd degree black belt in Shingitai Jujitsu. John has trained with and regularly instructs many law enforcement and military personnel.

New Fitness Class in Victor

(Posted February 22, 2008:) Beginning March 3rd, we will be offering a 10:00 a.m. "Power Core" class at the United Martial Arts Center in Victor. This weekly class will be added to the awesome morning "Fitness Fusion" classes currently offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. We currently have free babysitting for the Tuesday and Thursday classes and are certain we will have it for the Monday class soon (maybe even for the first class). If you know anyone who would like to babysit please have them call John at 924-7450. Remember, we also have free babysitting for ALL afternoon and evening fitness classes too!

The instructor of the Power Core class is Izy Grooms. Izy has her Masters Degree in Nutrition, is a Personal Fitness Trainer and is trained in Stott Pilates. The classes that Izy teaches are meant to energize, strengthen and provide balance to clients throughout their days and weeks. Her energy and passion can be easily seen even after taking one of her classes.

This class meshes an all out core strengthening program with traditional Pilates. We will be working from the inside out. Traditional health club core classes work the outer core muscles. This class will not only work those outer muscles but you will also learn to work the most inner muscle (the one that needs to be strengthened to prevent injury). This class is designed to tone, elongate and strengthen your muscles front and back which will make you feel taller, trimmer and stronger.

Women's Self-defense class coming March 15 to the Victor UMAC

(Posted February 22, 2008:) We will instruct a comprehensive two-hour course that teaches applied personal safety. Awareness and avoidance skills are always emphasized as the first line of self-defense. Beyond this you will be taught the physical techniques needed to protect yourself from a larger, stronger and more aggressive person.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • how to recognize potentially dangerous situations and avoid them.
  • to assess situations quickly and respond decisively.
  • the different types of offenders, their unique characteristics, and how best to handle each one.
  • verbal and physical tools to end an attempted assault and get to safety.
  • safety tips to use when at home, traveling, driving, shopping etc.

The cost of the course is $20 and pre-registration is required. It will be held Saturday, March 15 from 1-3 PM at our school in Victor. This course is for EVERY women 14 and older. It is for all ages and fitness levels as criminals target everyone. To register please call 924-7450.

JOHN INGALLINA RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

(Posted June 12, 2007:) We all know what a great guy John Ingallina is. So when he is formally recognized for what we already know is true, it just makes all of us UMACers bust with pride. This press release summarizes things nicely, so here it is:

Brighton – Local martial arts instructor and school owner, John Ingallina, was awarded the international “Instructor of the Year” from the Shingitai Jujitsu Association in a ceremony in Perrysville, Ohio on May 19. Mr. Ingallina, owner of the United Martial Arts Center’s in Brighton and Victor, was presented the award by former National Judo Champion, Olympic coach and 1987 USA Judo Coach of the Year, John Saylor.

“John Ingallina is a true teacher and coach in every sense of the word. He has the unique combination of being an incredible martial artist as well as an extremely effective communicator and motivator. The combination of these attributes are what sets him apart and made him the recipient of this year’s award,” stated Saylor.

“To be presented with this award from a man of Mr. Saylor’s background is truly an honor. The most rewarding part of what I do is watching the students succeed in both martial arts and life,” says Mr. Ingallina.

"I like all the things my daughter has been learning in the school; especially the self-discipline. She is more responsible at home and much more focused. The teachers grasp my daughter's attention and really teach."

A. Valero, Rochester

"My child has evolved from a shy, extremely sensitive child to one who has confidence, improved self-esteem, and a true meaning of self worth. He exhibits "Black Belt" behavior on a daily basis and someday hopes to achieve this status and rank. Thanks for a job well done."

M.A. McDonald, Brighton

"My overall feeling regarding the school is 'Outstanding.' My son has improved his listening skills, respect for others, self confidence & physical strength. He has learned that you can't always master something the first time - success takes practice. I would highly recommend the United Martial Arts Center to anyone."

Barbara Gerace, Brighton
