Check out which of these four people earned ADVANCED BLACK BELTS during our award ceremony on Saturday, August 14th.

Sensei Erik Piazza and Sensei Tim Oertel earned their second degree black belts on August 14, 2010 as they took part in an amazing display of skill, technique and camaraderie. They are both extremely talented and dedicated martial artists as well as two of the top teachers we have at UMAC. Their contribution is felt by all of us here and we are extremely fortunate to call them family. Sensei Piazza trains at the Brighton dojo and is a huge contributor to the teaching staff each time he steps on the floor. One of his many contributions to UMAC includes the summer camp, which he has organized and presided over for many years. Sensei Oertel trains at both the Brighton and Victor dojo but teaches primarily at the Victor dojo. His students emulate his desire and dedication as was evidenced at the black belt test.

Sensei David Kalish earned his third degree black belt on the same day. Sensei Kalish is the head instructor and operator of the United Martial Arts Center in Victor, NY. He and his phenomenal staff are directly responsible for facilitating the growth of hundreds of students since it’s opening in April of 2007. Sensei Kalish is an incredible tournament competitor and uses the skills that make him so good in that arena as attributes to bring out the best in all!

Sensei Pam Wright was awarded a fourth degree black belt during the ceremony. Sensei Wright opened UMAC with Sensei Ingallina in April of 1999 and has been directly responsible for its success throughout the years. The amount of space it would take to list her contributions would turn this into a ten page blog so we won’t even go there. She has been involved in EVERY ASPECT of EVERY PROGRAM that has been developed at UMAC. She developed the Little Dragon and Junior curriculum. The adult program was designed on her watch. Her kickboxing class has rocked Rochester for almost twelve years. She directly helps the lives of all in her role as a self defense instructor. And on and on… Although her titles are many, her biggest gifts cannot be measured. She is a role model to the young and old. She inspires people just from being with them. She is a friend, confidante, coach and inspiration to all of us. UMAC is what it is because of Sensei Pam Wright. Please let her know just how much she is appreciated and loved. There’s only one of her and we all feel lucky she’s ours!

We will be hosting Rory Miller at Brighton UMAC on Tuesday, May 25 from 7 – 10 p.m. This seminar is for any and all students and falls right in line with our Survival on the Street training philosophy. There will be training in the lower level for students that elect not to attend this seminar.

I would highly recommend that you attend though. You will take a ton from the experience.

Sensei Wright writes:

This past Friday evening we had the pleasure of graduating our Brighton students. As we only get this group together every 6 months, it’s a great time to reflect on what we have accomplished. Our Little Dragons, as usual, get out there with gusto and happily perform to show off for family and friends. I am always so pleased with their good behavior and attentiveness. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised – it is what we are working on in every class, it’s just so “in your face” when they do it as such a large group. They are amazing! We had students who were willing to lead the large group, yelling commands out loud in front of “all those people”….a feat I know many adults would be too shy to do! Good for them – their confidence and assertiveness will serve them well as they grow up.

I know it can’t go unnoticed to anyone who watches our Junior students as they progress in their ranks – they are growing up to be leaders. As karate instructors, we get to spend many years getting to know our students. Issues or struggles they had when they first arrived to try karate can be worked on together for longer periods of time. Students who start as Little Dragons and continue on to Juniors show us that our investment as their teachers can be the most fulfilling job we could ever have. Watching our kids grow in the dojo shows us the powerful influence of having positive role models in our children’s lives. As a karate mom myself, I know for a fact this is one of the best things I have done for my son. Ask me sometime – I’ll be happy to tell you all about it!

Congratulations to all the students who continue to work so hard to reach their goals. Your new ranks are proof that all your efforts are worth it! You make your instructors proud!!!!!

The martial arts are a lifestyle that strengthen the body, cultivate the mind and nurture the spirit. At the United Martial Arts Center, Hattasu Ryu Karate will facilitate these attributes in a positive setting with great people.

The martial arts are a lifestyle that will promote growth in every area of your life. Over the course of your study, you will progressively learn skills that will allow you to identify, respond and take control of a situation when the need arises. In addition to learning valuable self-defense techniques, you will identify positive changes in your life immediately. Becoming mentally and physically capable of defending yourself will accompany the advancement in personal growth. You will gain a greater level of self-confidence and perseverance. Relationships with family, friends and significant others grow and mature. Personal goal setting is also developed and practiced in our adult martial arts programs and can radically change your life.

The study of martial arts is a great way to improve your health, strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Stress levels diminish and relaxation takes its place. The mind, body and spirit will come together to form the body that we were all meant to appreciate in our lives.

HATTATSU RYU KARATE

Hattatsu Ryu is an eclectic martial art system developed by John Ingallina after many years of study in arts ranging from Karate, Jujitsu, Judo, Kung Fu, Wrestling, Boxing and Muay Thai. It is also, just as importantly, an art that incorporates and educates students in psychological self-defense and stresses the importance of physical fitness. The style emphasizes traditional values and work ethics combined with a modern day approach to self-protection. We follow the post 19th century karate format of teaching kihon (basics), kata (self defense forms) and kumite (sparring).

The system can be classified as a philosophy more than a defined group of movements. It is based on principles rather than a compilation of techniques. This is not to imply that the techniques that make up a system are not important. They are of great magnitude but they are not enough. The most refined techniques known will be of little use when one does not train with principles, a sound philosophy and a training regimen that allows a person to be physically and mentally capable of handling a situation. Remember that “situations” are not relegated to only physical altercations but also challenges that occur in our everyday lives.

Hattatsu Ryu is a system that takes into consideration the different sizes, ages, genders and physical capabilities of the students. It is one that offers enough freedom to allow students to learn and excel at their own pace, utilizing their own individual strengths. As the name implies, we are a school of progressive growth. The students are encouraged to always keep an open mind and to explore and educate themselves in all areas of self-improvement, both in and out of the arena of martial arts.

United Martial Arts Center's children's martial arts program will greatly enhance your child's self confidence and concentration for a better head start in life.

One of the most rewarding activities that your child can be involved in is the Martial Arts! United Martial Arts Center’s children’s martial arts program will greatly enhance your child’s self-confidence and concentration for a better head start in life. This not only helps them to improve their grades in school, but also prepares them to excel in all of life’s challenges. Our children students also develop a more positive attitude that helps them to say “NO” to unhealthy peer pressure.

By enrolling your child in our program, you will increase their coordination and overall fitness, assisting them in all other activities and sports. We inspire goal setting in our students – helping them learn and strive for their next rank. This also applies to studying in order to do better in school.

This educational program is taught through enjoyable activities and challenging exercises. It is an excellent counter-part to formal education. The skills taught in our classroom are invaluable in helping young people achieve their future goals. Best of all, they will have great FUN doing it!

Children develop into responsible, respectful and successful individuals through the constant nurturing and reinforcement of developing positive character traits. They learn the value of goal setting and the reward of committing themselves to their goals. They learn to respect and be respected as this leads to a great deal of self-esteem. Concentration and focus evolve as the child begins to progress. This will be evident in his or her karate, but just as important, in their academic studies.

HOW DO I CHOOSE A MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL FOR MY CHILD?

Step one in choosing a school is to clearly understand what you want you or your child to gain from learning the martial arts. Is it a light recreation? Then a community center program may suffice. Is it self-defense or personal development? If so, then a full-time professional school will be more suitable. Many parents view the martial arts as part of their child’s educational development. With a good professional school, this is very possible.

Step two is to recognize that choosing a school is really choosing an instructor. Be sure to visit the school and watch the instructor work with other children of the same age. Every school is very different because every instructor is different. Don’t get confused by claims of black belt degrees, tournament wins or martial art styles. The only style that matters is the teaching style of the instructor and how your child will respond to him or her.

Finally, trust your instincts. A professional school will have a family atmosphere, lots of smiles and be well kept. You’ll feel comfortable with the personnel and the facility.

While United Martial Arts Center may not end up being the closest school to your house, when it comes to the safety and education of your child, an extra ten-minute drive can make a world of difference in the outcome.

WHAT OTHER PARENTS ARE SAYING:

“The United Martial Arts Center has been ideal for me as a parent. My child is not only learning a martial art; he is learning life’s lessons. The children work hard and are encouraged to be proud of what they accomplish. Thank you.” – S. Russell, Rochester – Parent

“My child has evolved from a shy, extremely sensitive child to one who has confidence, improved self-esteem, and a true meaning of self worth. He exhibits “Black Belt” behavior on a daily basis and someday hopes to achieve this status and rank. Thanks for a job well done.” – M.A. McDonald, Brighton – Parent

“As we’ve told you many times, This is a wonderful experience for our child. My husband and I are so impressed with everone’s teaching. You all seem to be so intuitive regarding the various personalities in class.” – A. Balderston, Rochester Parent

The RAP Defense System is a program that has been developed exclusively for women and their self-protection needs.

The RAP Defense System is a program that has been developed exclusively for women and their self-protection needs. Physical, psychological and verbal skills are taught to prepare and protect women from very specific situations. The situations, attacks and defenses that surround an assault on a woman are much different than those that surround a man. These differences are studied, responses are determined and reactions are then constantly reinforced to protect and empower the student to control the outcome. Mental preparation and verbal responses are critically important areas of study in the RAP Defense System. Students of the system not only learn to protect themselves, they also become more confident, assertive and successful in every other area in their lives.

The Rape and Assault Prevention Association teaches applied personal safety. Awareness and avoidance skills are always emphasized as the first line of self-defense. Beyond this you will be taught the physical techniques needed to protect yourself from a larger, stronger and more aggressive person.

YOU WILL LEARN:

* how to recognize potentially dangerous situations and avoid them.
* to assess situations quickly and respond decisively.
* the different types of offenders, their unique characteristics, and how best to handle each one.
* verbal and physical tools to end an attempted assault and get to safety.
* safety tips to use when at home, traveling, driving, shopping etc.

Our programs range from a one-hour lecture, a two or four-hour seminar, to yet a full eight hour hands on workshop.

These programs will give you the knowledge, skills and attitude that lead to self-confidence and his self-esteem. The concepts taught and the numerous subjects covered genuinely make this a life changing experience.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Can this really happen to me?

We hope not. But the experts say that one in three women will be sexually assaulted sometime during their life. This training could keep you, or someone you love, from being a statistic.

Is this a martial arts class?

No – while some of the physical and psychological techniques are similar, this program is a concise and practical method of self-preservation.

Will these techniques work for me?

Without a doubt. Everyone can learn these simple yet effective techniques. This system of self-defense is appropriate for all ages, all levels of fitness, and all body types.

Can I really lower my chances of being raped by attending this program?

Absolutely! Not only will you become more aware of your surroundings but also you will be mentally and physically prepared to control a dangerous situation if it occurs. Remember, over 80% of the women that fought back helped their situation.

Will I remember these techniques?

Reviewing and practicing any learned material will always help with the retention. However, once you become attuned to the psychology of self-defense you will react to a situation automatically. An occasional review class is also recommended.

When are the classes scheduled?

The classes are typically run on Saturdays from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. Dates for upcoming classes and other information are posted on our blog, or you can fill out our online information request form to be notified of upcoming classes or seminars.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

“I was taught to change my attitude and think as a resourceful survivor instead of a victim. The hands on practice of the techniques were truly empowering!” – K. Jacobs, M.D.

“The information we learned, the vast knowledge of the subject by the instructors, and the hands on techniques make this class invaluable to all women.” – M. Dennis, Administrative Assistant

“The insight they gave me on rape awareness and prevention was unbelievable. The physical techniques were incredibly empowering. Every women in every business or organization should have the opportunity to take this course!” – G. Morelle, Business Owner

“The structure of the course, the material presented and their organized focus left me with the confidence that I just received a high level education from true professionals. I have and will continue to recommend your course to my family, friends and business associates.” – C. Griffith, Financial Services
